If you’re excited about the potential of technology in general and BIS, in particular, to transform business operations and improve efficiency, consider enrolling in a BS in Business Information Systems degree. Students who enroll in this program take courses that teach the competencies necessary to succeed within this field.
The business theories and concepts in this program include management, accounting, economics, statistics and various marketing concepts. Students are also immersed in courses that focus on technological information, such as database management, programming and IT project management. These two elements, business and technological information, work together to prepare graduates to tackle modern challenges in business and management confidently.
A degree in business information systems teaches graduates the knowledge and skills needed to develop and implement information systems in business environments. BIS can also refer to the field, study and practice of how information and communication technologies can be utilized in all different types of companies within different industries to improve business processes.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems degree program at Grand Canyon University explores the use of technology to solve problems in the business world. BIS is a multidisciplinary field that brings together elements of computer science, information technology, project management and others.

BIS might seem high-tech, but it’s actually not a new concept. The concept of a BIS has pre-digital-era roots. For example, a paper-based filing system used at a business office could be considered a BIS. Today, however, BIS are usually complex computer systems that are increasingly reliant on advanced and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence.
How do information systems benefit businesses? It can be helpful to envision the benefits of BIS through the lens of specific examples of information systems:
A CRM is a common example of a BIS. It is a centralized platform that facilitates interactions between the organization’s employees or representatives and its customers. A typical CRM contains reams of customer data, such as a customer’s contact info, purchasing history and feedback.
An executive support system is designed with the needs of high-level executives in mind. It brings together all relevant internal and external data, such as organizational performance, competitor activities and trend forecasts. These examples of information systems help executives make more informed decisions that will shape the direction of the company.
A transaction processing system is designed to handle the workload of the business’ day-to-day operations. For example, this type of system can track and monitor inventory, process orders and process payment information.
A company can use a management information system to organize all its financial statements, performance data and inventory reports. Reports and statistics can reveal key data about sales, expenses, inventory levels and similar key performance indicators.
All organizations rely on internal communication and collaboration to carry out daily operations and execute projects. Business collaboration systems are designed to allow for seamless interdepartmental communication, collaboration and information sharing.
